Everyone at Joe User is just so happy and fun! You have to have a sense of humor with a name like Joe User!

I was considering starting a blogsite dedicated to the discussion of marriage. I was going to call it Harry Crabs. My wife balked, so I digress.

There is really no virtual community to compare to the honest, open perspective that Joe User has. There should be more like it. This world would be a much richer, more diverse place.

I, as soooooooo many others are just grateful to be blessed by the absolute intelligence that this community offers.

Thank you so much. And to do it all for free?! Wow!

Yeah, but are we talking 6% proof, used to measure the strength of spirits, or 6% alcoholic volume, used to measure beers and wines?

starkers... legislation requires that all beers available for sale in Oz are labelled with alc/vol...whether local or imported.

My 'usual' is 5.8 [Coopers Sparkling] ...though the 'best' [fave] is the Vintage...at around 7.0 [but it's a vintage so not available year-round].

I did get sick as a dog when I was 16 on home brew reportedly over 11 ....people were amazed I survived 3 glasses [but then I 'didn't']....

As for that fine-tasting Pommie beer...I think cat's piss possibly also has more alcohol...

Ah, but the 4.8 stuff isn't our strongest, it's just the preferred strength for sale in pubs....we have others around 6.5% alcoholic volume, with some boutique beers weighing in around 8 to 9%. I used to brew my own around that, tho on occasion it would come closer to 10 - 11%....which would make anyone legless after a couple of long-necks, seasoned drinkers included.

Pshaw! A good German Bock beer still cant be beat (yeast dies at the 12% level that is why you cant get higher Alcohol content in your beer).

But in the effort of fairness, should I ever get an occassion to visit Oz, I will look you up so my palate can compare your homebrew with those it remembers from Frankfurt am Main.

It never ceases to amaze me how Australians to a man are familiar with the taste of cat's piss. Must be that unique Australian culture...

NOT bloody likely!! This thread has become an independent entity of its originator, has become a cultural and comedic past-time that transcends political conspiracies and international borders, has a lifeforce much greater than any individual and is too darned BIG to be stopped...even the armies of the world (perhaps even the universe)are poweless against it now.

Yes, I knew that...but my question related to how the beer alcohol content was being measured, as some mistakenly do so by the 'percentage/proof' method and others by alcoholic volume, which is correct and totally different strength-wise. Alcohol volume equates to the entire amount of alcohol content per brew, whereas alcohol percentage or 'proof' is the quantity of alcohol per mil or ounce, whatever....if beer weighed in at 33 to 45 proof, it'd rot shoe leather and pickle yer socks as well as your liver. Actually, my grandfather used to drink a viscious drop of cider (Cider Royale) that came in around 120 proof and was supposed to be drunk only in nips....now a 'pint' of 'that' would pickle the floorboards you're standing on as well.

So why d'ya wait so long? My first time legless was around 12 or 13 when some mates and I found a carton of 4 x 8 pint cans of scrumpy (cider, for the uneducated outside of England's South) and we got well 'n truly stuck into it....and yes, it actually fell off the back of a truck The next 4 or 5 days afterwards were much of a blur and I was ill, I mean really ill, which my parents thought punishment enough....not that I agreed, having to have 4 days off school to recover.

Pshaw! A good German Bock beer still cant be beat (yeast dies at the 12% level that is why you cant get higher Alcohol content in your beer).

Maybe they can't be beaten, but they'd have some serious competition in some of the potently nasty boutique stuff I sampled over the years. Geez, looking back on it, I'm glad I no longer partake....so sorry about that, Dr Guy, no palate pleasers here, as I brew my own no more.

Well we wouldn't be familiar (with cat's piss) if Pommie brewers didn't export it here, and then for us to have ex-patriates serve it up when it's their 'shout' at the pub is unforgivable. Hence, the unique Aussie culture has become that Pommies are 'sent to coventry' while at the pub, unless of course they learn the error of their ways and actually drink/shout 'real' beer.

Actually, when I lived over there, I quite enjoyed a pint or 6 of Whitbread Tankard, Newcastle Brown, John Bull Best Bitter, etc, etc, etc...but oh, this rivalry between we Aussies and the Brits, wouldn't be without it.

Wow, this post sure got a lot more attention than it deserved....but that's nothing new in the blog-o-sphere I suppose. Just thought I'd say hi to all of JU. I'm not "back" perse', just droppin' in to say hello and see if anyone has ransacked the place. I guess I'll know who to go after if I'm looking to boost my blog ten of thousands of points.

yea, but your Tee-Totaling deprived me of some home brew!  And I will never forgive you for that.......At least for the next 24 minutes.

No worries, I'll survive! But we can still have fun without the grog, poking fun at politicians and conspiracy theorists, etc. And if we were to ask Brad nicely enough if we could use his Liberal detector and other surveilance equipment, maybe we could weed out a few more to hold up for public ridicule...I mean, not all of 'em are silly enough to volunteer us the opportunity, are they!!

Ah, so you missed the wild party, then! The one that almost turned orgiastic and saw the place in dire need of redecorating....the police taking away unruly gatecrashers who convinced the Stardock Cheerleaders to participate in a wet T-shirt comp, and kept yelling: "Take it all off!".

As you can see, they've managed to clean up the forum, but the consequences of the food fight are proving more difficult....

Where did this conversation turn into homebrewing? Start a new thread boys!

Ah!  But this one is so much fun.

Well, in that case, I recently went to my friends "tour de bier" where there were jerseys given like the tour de france for beer with highest alcohol content, beer from farthest away, and the participant who sampled the most. We won the highest alcohol and farthest away jerseys for having a french beer that was 13% alcohol and a beer from new zealand.

yeehaw!

You still haven't explained how you know what cat's piss tastes like, you must have made a comparison somewhere

The French make beer?

Congratulations on your wins however.

Enjoy the points.

If this post was created before theguypc had a blog site, that would mean it only exists on the forums right? In which case, wouldn't he only be receiving points for his posts, not all responses? I thought that was the way it used to work, although I could certainly be wrong, since I have two blog sites and have never actually written an article.

It'd be 'nice' if he WERE getting points for it.....make the original premise just that little bit more sad and pathetic....
